Davis could be famously harsh on co-stars, the joke later in her career was that she was trying to kill off all the other old actresses. Certainly she worked repeatedly with Olivia de Havilland. When Myrna Loy was leaving on her first theatrical tour, she mentions in her memoirs that Davis called with tips for touring. Each character different and beautifully nuanced. Then there is Strangers with Gena Rowlands, a heart wrenching performance for which she was awarded an Emmy. I enjoy many of Miriam's performances but Bette was no one note performer and Leaming's attempt at a hatchet job fails on every level. She doesn't quite succeed as she can't avoid the brilliance of Davis in her many film roles. As to Davis not developing as an actress, let's take Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, Dead Ringer, Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte and The Nanny from the sixties. A variety of roles with her acting range on full show, she is able to embody each different character so thoroughly. She went on to do the same right up to the end of her career. Her Emmy award for Strangers should also be noted. I admire many of Hopkins portrayals, particularly in the thirties and her later character roles, but was she a superior actress to Davis, I don't think so.Protonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07249697428621036141noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-833161426229360042.post-24673002357283978012017-08-24T07:49:27.168-04:002017-08-24T07:49:27.168-04:00One of my favorites! One of my favorites!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05141321553143082969noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-833161426229360042.post-60678183554904585062017-08-11T23:42:49.806-04:002017-08-11T23:42:49.806-04:00Beautiful, perceptive observation. Sadly, Davis was not capable of growing as an actress and expanding her talent. Davis was very good from the mid 30s to the early 40s but then repeated what she had already done and relied on her familiar mannerisms. Hopkins did grow as an actress and was always in demand as a character actress after her Star days. This was due to her adaptable acting talent. William Wyler loved working with Hopkins, while he said, after The Little Foxes, he never wanted to work with Davis again.
