It is so beautifully made. I do agree about Jimmy Stewart, though. He did an excellent job... It is made more poignant by the fact Stewart soon afterward left Hollywood to become a combat bombardier 1942-1945 flying dozens of missions over Nazi occupied Europe.RICHARD K. I think they were wonderful in it. Isn't Sullavan known as one of Jimmy Stewarts loves of his life? Well I thought I read that some where. Anyway they work well together. Great review!<br />JOClassicJohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18084603957211826254noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-833161426229360042.post-91955476244614759672009-08-02T20:12:37.988-04:002009-08-02T20:12:37.988-04:00A brilliant film and yes at that age, Jimmy was pr...A brilliant film and yes at that age, Jimmy was probably too apple pie for the role. He once went to a party with blonde 40s actress Myrna Dell and got chatting to a gentleman at the dressy suare only to find out he had been talking to the butler...you gotta love Jimmy...but who would you have given this part too at the time it was being made. Maybe a young Glenn Ford or William Holden!!!!Davidhttp://www.dpriol.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-833161426229360042.post-33292964122823127832009-08-01T15:07:55.999-04:002009-08-01T15:07:55.999-04:00Rupert, I agree that this is a powerful and prophe...Rupert, I agree that this is a powerful and prophetic film. Margaret Sullavan is one of the great nearly-unknown actresses of the studio era. She didn't make many movies, but she was excellent in all the ones I've seen, and like Katharine Hepburn, not quite like any other actress of the time. She had wonderful rapport with James Stewart (especially in "The Shop Around the Corner"). It was also interesting to see Robert Young playing an ultimately unsympathetic part for once. This movie makes an interesting comparison to "Three Comrades," in which Sullavan gives a fantastic performance (and got her only Oscar nomination--Bette Davis won for "Jezebel"). It also costars Young and was directed by Borzage (and was supposedly written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, based on a novel by Erich Maria Remarque, who wrote "All Quiet on the Western Front"), but all specific references to Nazi Germany were removed and the country and political movement made vague, at the insistence of the German government, because MGM didn't want their movies banned in Germany. In this movie, it is much more obvious what the subject is, and that makes the film even more powerful on that level. I certainly agree that this is a movie well worth watching.R. D. What really creative casting. I'll bet Dailey was really into the part, too.
